Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us all that mental health is health. Mental health is just as important as physical health and is a key component of our overall health.

What is mental health?

Mental health is a state of well-being that enables us to cope with life’s stresses, realize our abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to our community.

Mental and physical health are closely related

It is crucial to understand the correlation between mental and physical health. If one is ignored or compromised, you will likely suffer from the other in the coming years.

For example, suppose someone is dealing with depression and doesn’t take the necessary help to deal with that. In that case, they are subjecting themselves to increased risks for many physical, long-lasting chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

On the other hand, the presence of chronic conditions can significantly increase the risk of developing a mental health condition. If someone suffers from a long-standing physical illness and isn’t able to cope with that stress, they may be at risk of going into depression.

Fortunately, there are accessible practices that support both mental and physical well-being — one of the most holistic being yoga.

How can yoga help balance mental and physical well-being?

Yoga is a powerful tool for maintaining mental and physical health. Through mindful bodily movement and breathwork, it helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and bring clarity to the mind.

On the other hand, it builds physical strength, flexibility, endurance, and core stability, which in turn contribute to better energy levels and overall wellness. Consistent yoga practice brings self-awareness and balance, ultimately helping you manage daily challenges with more ease and resilience.

This May, let’s start with our own healing with the help of yoga, and let’s come together to break the stigma, share our stories to give strength and hope, and offer support to those seeking their path to healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted professional or support group. You are not alone.
